Time To Dust Off The Trailer & Get It Hauling Again?

If your trailer has been chilling in storage for a while, it's time to give it some TLC before you load it up and head out on your next adventure. A bit of spiderweb removal might not be enough to get it road-ready, especially if it's been sitting idle for months.

Before you hook it up to your vehicle, let's run through some basic safety and maintenance checks to ensure a smooth and worry-free journey.

TRAILER CHECKLIST TO GET YOUR WHEELS ROLLIN'

  1. Check Shackles and Couplings: Take a peek at the shackles and coupling. Is everything looking tip-top? Make sure there are no cracks, warps, or chips. A little grease can go a long way in making hitching and unhitching a breeze. Don't forget to inspect the tow bar, hitch ball, shackles, and safety chains on your vehicle for any signs of wear and tear.

  2. Tailgate Test: Your trailer might be in good shape, but is it ready to handle your cargo safely? Double-check attachment points for ropes or tarps and ensure the tailgate stays securely in place.

  3. Basic Maintenance Checks: Even if your trailer hasn't seen much action lately, it still needs some love. Check those tyres for cracks or rot, adjust the pressure, and check the lug nuts. Hitch it up and make sure all the lights are shining bright. Give the structure a once-over for any sneaky rust spots.

  4. Bearing Check: Don't forget about those wheel bearings! If they're not properly lubricated, they can cause some serious trouble. Listen for squeaks or grinding noises while test driving or give each wheel a spin while jacked up. Smooth spinning means your bearings are happy campers.

  5. Paperwork Patrol: Before you hit the road, make sure your trailer is street legal. Register it online with NZTA and don't forget the Warrant of Fitness. If you've recently bought the trailer, sort out the change of ownership pronto. And don't skimp on insurance – better safe than sorry!

  6. What If It's a Lost Cause? If your trailer is beyond repair, it might be time to upgrade. At Tuff Trailers, we've got a range of trailers to suit every need. Check out our selection online or get in touch to find your perfect match.
